Consulting company Bain & Co. topped Glassdoor’s 2025 list of the best large workplaces in the US for the second year in a row, while the number of tech companies dropped for the third consecutive year.
Bain’s professional development opportunities played a significant role in the company’s position at the head of the list, said Daniel Zhao, Glassdoor’s lead economist. The lack of such opportunities pushed tech organizations off the list, he added.
With 26 companies on the list, tech is still the most represented industry. However, 31 tech companies populated the list in 2024, and 41 made the cut in 2023.
There have been layoffs in the tech industry, which has caused it to lose some of its previous luster. “As hiring has slowed down, opportunities for internal and external mobility have declined,” Zhao said. “There are a lot of workers who feel disengaged because they don’t see those opportunities for growth.” Zhao said the opportunity for career advancement is the most critical factor in driving worker satisfaction.
“People really want to have a sense that they have the space for growth that they need, but even beyond things like benefits or work-life balance,” Zhao said.
Three tech companies are in the top 10, despite the overall drop in industry representation: Microsoft, MathLabs, and NVIDIA. Pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly is also in that group. Zhao said that NVIDIA and Lilly are attractive to employees because they are stand-outs in their respective fields. NVIDIA is one of the top leaders in AI, while Lilly manufactures Mounjaro, a drug approved for diabetes that is also used for weight loss and has sales of more than $3 billion annually.
“Obviously, being at the bleeding edge of innovation is great for business,” Zhao said, “but it can also be a powerful motivator for employees as well.” He added it’s “definitely a factor” for a company’s place on the list.
Rounding out the top 10 are Crew Carwash, In-N-Out Burger, eXp Realty, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and RLI.
Only companies with at least 1,000 employees are considered for the list, which is compiled based on employee reviews.
