HR Moves: HR shakeups at Tesla and Boeing as shares slump

Sesame Workshop, Macy’s, and the US Soccer Federation also announced new leadership in recent months.

It’s been a busy few months in the HR world, with plenty of leadership shakeups. Read on for some of the industry’s biggest changes.

Boeing. Uma Amuluru took over as EVP of HR at the aerospace manufacturer on April 1, according to a press release. She now oversees global talent acquisition, compensation, and diversity initiatives. Amuluru joined Boeing in 2017 and most recently served as assistant general counsel. She took over the role from Michael D’Ambrose, who spent four years at the company and announced his retirement in July.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Bridgette Wilder was appointed the organization’s first chief people and culture officer in late March after spending a year as VP of people of culture, according to a press release. The newly created position oversees the previously dispersed HR teams, as well as employee relations, development and training, compensation, and employee resource affinity groups. Wilder has 30 years of HR experience, and previously worked at organizations including the California Institute of the Art, Albany State University, the City of Memphis, and Verizon.

Macy’s. Abigail James, a marketing professional who’s been at Macy’s for 27 years, was named SVP and chief DE&I officer on April 18, the company said in a press release. Her new role includes oversight of the company’s Mission Every One program, and inclusion initiatives for employees and customers. James is taking over from Shawn Outler, who began at the company in 2018 and created Macy’s first DE&I Center of Expertise.

Sesame Workshop. Sunny days are ahead for Dannette “Danni” Hill, Sesame Workshop’s first chief people officer. Hill will report to interim CEO Sherrie Westin and oversee all HR functions for the company’s 400-plus employees, according to Variety. Her previous roles include head of people and culture at science and technology nonprofit Schmidt Futures, and CHRO and SVP of leadership and culture at Planned Parenthood.

Tesla. Allie Arebalo, Tesla’s head of HR, left the company amid dwindling sales, recalls, and mass layoffs, the Independent reported on May 1. Arebalo spent six years at Tesla, and both her next role and her successor currently remain unclear.

US Soccer Federation. Lisa Buckingham, an HR professional with more than 25 years of experience, joined US Soccer as CHRO earlier this month, where she’ll be in charge of driving an exclusive culture and talent retention strategies, according to a press release. She previously worked at Ellig Group, an executive recruiting firm, and spent 12 years at Lincoln Financial Group, where she ascended to CHRO.

US State Department. Secretary of State Antony Blinken hired a new chief diversity and inclusion officer in April, according to NBC News. Zakiya Carr Johnson is tasked with helping the department decrease discrimination and turnover of underrepresented groups. She previously served as a director of race, ethnicity, and social inclusion at the State Department from 2010 to 2017 before founding Odara Solutions, a consulting firm focused on increasing representation from underrepresented communities. She spent the last three years at the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
