Consider, if you will, how the last few years have impacted the world of hiring. From managing an overnight global shift to remote work to hybrid + cross-border work models, it might be easier to name what hasn’t changed.
Needless to say, HR teams have had a lot on their plates. And one of their main goals is to think proactively about the future—instead of reacting to it.
Employers are recruiting + retaining younger employees, navigating talent shortages, and making hiring decisions with the long term in mind. We teamed up with Deel to find out what they’ve learned from a global database of over 1 million worker contracts in the 2024 State of Global Hiring Report.
The Gen Z effect
Yep, let’s start with the obvious. There’s a common misconception that Gen Z workers, the youngest cohort to join the workforce, have struggled to adapt to their new roles. But the reality is that employers are eager to hire and retain their younger employees.
Here are the numbers to back it up: In 2024, Gen Z employees received bigger raises (a whopping 9%) than their coworkers across other generations. Gen Z also received the lowest percentage of involuntary terminations (36%).
What’s so special about Gen Z focus? For starters, they bring some unique skills to the table.
“Gen Z brings digital-native skills, a focus on purpose over pay, and a demand for career personalization and development to the workplace,” said Alice Burks, director of people success at Deel. “These traits can translate well when it comes to distributed work, which often enables a high degree of personalization in when, where, and how people work. Organizations can nurture this group by offering flexibility while continuing to invest in their development and career advancement.”
Our bet? Over the next few years, you’ll see an uptick in Gen Z’s presence across the workforce as they start moving from interns and entry-level employees to leaders and decision-makers.
Close to home
According to the data, employers are starting to hire a little closer to home. Deel saw 104% growth in domestic hiring last year. So, has the remote bubble burst? Not exactly. Many of those employees are still work-from-wherever: 82% of workers on Deel were remote in 2024.
Global hiring isn’t going anywhere, either, with cross-border hiring growing 42% in 2024.
However, even orgs hiring internationally seem to be tightening up time zones to try to reduce time differences. Half of the cross-border hires in Great Britain last year worked within the same time zone, and 41% of cross-border hires in Germany were within an hour of their employer’s time zone.
“Whether or not you’re returning to an office, workers within your time zone offer companies more options to work synchronously,” said Alan Price, director of talent acquisition at Deel.
Accounting’s big moment
As companies go global, the demand for accountants has surged. To operate in multiple countries, orgs need a talented crew of accounting pros to make sure all their financial bases are covered, including navigating tricky, country-specific tax requirements. As a result, hiring for accountants on Deel grew by 74% in 2024.
But amid all this demand, the accounting field is experiencing a concerning talent shortage. Early-career workers aren’t as interested in the profession as previous generations. And managing a globally distributed team is an increasingly complex task, requiring experienced pros to take the helm. What’s an employer to do?
They found a new way to compete for top-tier candidates: higher salaries. Accountants’ salaries grew by 15% last year, faster than any other job group Deel surveyed.
Moral of the story? Become a CPA. Employers are willing to pay for talented employees who can help set up their orgs for success moving forward.
